Russia's Legal Battle with Shell: Energy Tensions Rise

Russia's Prosecutor General has taken legal action against eight units of energy giant Shell, according to court documents revealed on Friday. The lawsuit, which was filed with Moscow's Arbitration Court on October 2, involves Gazprom Export and other regional and national authorities, including Sakhalin Energy.

Details surrounding the lawsuit remain scant, and Shell has yet to comment on the developments. Previously, Shell was engaged in multiple energy projects in Russia, but geopolitical tensions, notably Russia's aggressive military intervention in Ukraine in February 2022, led to significant changes.

The British energy giant had previously held a stake in the Sakhalin LNG plant managed by Gazprom. In response to Western sanctions, Russia tightened its control over the plant, prompting Shell's exit and divestment from projects like the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
