West Bengal Greenlights Supercritical Power Plant in Sagardighi
The West Bengal Cabinet has approved the setup of a 660-megawatt supercritical electricity plant in Sagardighi. This will be the first of its kind in eastern India, with 95% of the work completed. The state plans to build five more power plants and has also converted land in Paschim Bardhaman for a new steel and power project.

The West Bengal Cabinet on Monday approved the establishment of a 660-megawatt supercritical electricity plant in Sagardighi, Murshidabad district, according to Power Minister Arup Biswas.
The Cabinet also greenlit proposals for building five additional power plants. Power Minister Biswas noted, 'We will be setting up a new 660-megawatt supercritical power plant in Sagardighi. This will be eastern India's first power plant of its kind.'
The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, also endorsed the creation of a new 1600 MW power plant, with plans to float a global tender. This project will follow a PPP model, marking a first for the state, Biswas confirmed. Concurrently, the state government has converted land in Paschim Bardhaman to freehold status for establishing a new steel and power project.
