Delhi's Tis Hazari court has granted a three-day custody remand of Rajnish, alias Situ, to investigate the Delhi police constable hit and drag case. Rajnish, who was freshly arrested, appeared in court under allegations of involvement in the constable's death between two vehicles.
Judicial Magistrate First Class Charu Asiwal approved the three-day custody, with the accused set to be produced again on October 3. Delhi police initially sought a five-day remand, citing Rajnish's presence in the offending vehicle during the incident.
The driver of the vehicle remains at large. It's reported that the suspects visited a friend in Ponta Sahib, Himachal Pradesh. Police are searching for the driver and vehicle owner, intending to take Rajnish to Jhajjar, Haryana, and Ponta Sahib for further investigation.
Defense lawyer Aashutosh Bhardwaj opposed the remand, arguing Rajnish wasn't driving and lacked criminal intent, making five days custody unjustified. He also claimed that the accused's elder brother, Akashdeep, was illegally detained, which police denied, stating Akashdeep was released after inquiry.
The court highlighted the broader implications of police fatalities on law and order while dealing with defense objections.
