Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called for a national-level National Register of Citizens (NRC) to address the growing issue of illegal Bangladeshi infiltration, now perceived as a national crisis. Sarma stressed the need for parliament to deliberate extensively on the matter.
Emphasizing the importance of an error-free NRC, Sarma advocated for a 20 percent re-verification process in Assam and suggested similar measures for other states, such as Jharkhand. He warned that infiltrators could traverse through Assam and West Bengal and return with fraudulent Aadhaar cards, highlighting the national scope of the problem.
Sarma noted the daily apprehension of Bangladeshi nationals at border areas and the misuse of Aadhaar cards to re-enter Assam. He has been vocal on social media, aiming to elevate the issue to a national debate. The matter, currently under Supreme Court review for Assam, also involves legal proceedings in Jharkhand. The Assam NRC authorities had previously sought a comprehensive re-verification from the Supreme Court, citing significant irregularities.
