A bullion trader, Mehul Thakkar, was recently swindled out of 2.1 kgs of gold in an audacious scam involving counterfeit currency, bizarrely featuring Bollywood actor Anupam Kher.
The scam unfolded when Prashant Patel, a familiar jeweler, agreed to buy gold for Rs 1.60 crore. Thakkar’s staff met Patel's associates at a faux 'angadia pedhi' office, designed to look like a legitimate money-moving service.
Thakkar's employees realized the currency was fake only after the gold had been handed over. Police are now investigating the matter, having registered an FIR against the unknown perpetrators.
