Supreme Court Halts Sonapur Demolition Drive, Issues Notice to Assam Authorities

The Supreme Court has instructed authorities to maintain the status quo regarding the demolition drive in Sonapur, Assam, and has issued notices to the concerned parties. This directive follows a contempt petition filed by more than 40 residents, accusing the authorities of willfully violating the court's interim order from September 17, which paused demolitions across the nation without prior court approval.

Representing the petitioners, Senior Advocate Huzefa Ahmadi presented the case before a bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan. The bench issued notices to the Assam Government and other respondents, as the petitioners sought contempt proceedings against the local authorities for defying the previous order. The bench instructed the parties to maintain the status quo until further notice.

The petitioners, hailing from Kachutoli village in Sonapur, alleged that local authorities had begun an eviction drive without following due process, including issuing notices or adhering to the Supreme Court's directive. They emphasized that their occupation of the land is legally valid under a power of attorney granted by the original landowners, many of whom belong to protected communities. The court has demanded an explanation from the authorities while the eviction process remains halted.
