Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Struck Again Amidst Ongoing Conflict
Ukrainian forces reportedly attacked an electricity substation near the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, destroying a transformer. This plant, Europe's largest, has been a contentious site since Russia's February 2022 invasion. Each side regularly accuses the other of targeting the plant, raising concerns about potential nuclear incidents.
Ukrainian forces allegedly launched a new attack on a nearby electricity substation of the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, destroying a transformer, according to the plant's management.
The Zaporizhzhia station, Europe's largest nuclear facility with six reactors, has been under Russian control since the early days of the February 2022 invasion. Accusations fly from both sides regarding attacks on the plant, heightening fears of a potential nuclear disaster.
In a Telegram post, the plant's management described the artillery strike on the 'Raduga' substation in Enerhodar as a 'terrorist act' aimed at destabilizing the satellite city's situation. Despite visible smoke from the hit, power supplies to Enerhodar remain unaffected. Previously, the Ukrainian military was accused of attacking another substation on September 20. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha claimed Russia plans to strike Ukrainian nuclear sites before winter, though he provided no specifics.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has permanently stationed monitors at the plant, urging both sides to avoid attacks to prevent any nuclear incidents.
