The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended a critical suspect in the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) case involving the planting of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) across various locations in Assam. Girish Barua, also known as Gautam Baruah, was detained on the outskirts of Bengaluru, where he had been evading authorities, the NIA disclosed in a press release.
The case was initiated by the NIA in September, concerning the placement of explosive devices throughout Assam by the outlawed terrorist group ULFA-I. These actions were part of an armed protest against the Independence Day celebrations in India. "The accused was involved with a group of ULFA-I operatives that strategically placed IEDs in North Lakhimpur district in Assam under the direction of the outfit's top leaders," stated the NIA.
Following his arrest, Barua was presented before the Special NIA Court in Bengaluru on September 25. The court ordered his transit remand and subsequent production before the NIA Special Court in Guwahati, Assam. Investigations into the case are ongoing. (ANI)
