Blinken Condemns Putin's Irresponsible Nuclear Threat
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin's warning about potential nuclear weapons usage, calling it irresponsible. Blinken's comments came during the U.N. General Assembly in New York, emphasizing the global need for disarmament and non-proliferation amid ongoing conflicts in Ukraine.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has strongly condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent nuclear threat, labeling it as 'irresponsible' during an interview with MSNBC. Blinken's remarks came at a critical time when world leaders have gathered in New York for the U.N. General Assembly.
'It's totally irresponsible,' Blinken stated. 'Many in the world have spoken clearly about that when he's been rattling the nuclear sabre - including China, in the past. To do that now, while the world's gathered and talking about the need for more disarmament and non-proliferation, is particularly alarming.'
Putin issued his warning on Wednesday, suggesting that Russia might deploy nuclear weapons if struck with conventional missiles—a situation escalating as the U.S. and Britain contemplate allowing Ukraine to fire conventional Western missiles into Russia.
