Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament from Basirhat, West Bengal, Haji Sheikh Nurul Islam, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 61. Islam, who had been battling cancer for a prolonged period, succumbed at his residence in North 24 Parganas district after his health deteriorated.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her sorrow on social media, noting the significant loss. 'Sad to know of the demise of my valued colleague, our MP of Basirhat, Haji Sk. Nurul Islam. He was a dedicated social worker in a remote Sundarban area, and he worked hard for the upliftment of poor people in a backward region. People of Basirhat will miss his leadership,' Banerjee posted on X.

Banerjee, along with several other TMC leaders, extended their condolences to Islam's family and colleagues. TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev conveyed her heartfelt sympathies on X, stating, 'I am extremely sorry to hear about the passing away of Member of Parliament Haji Nurul Islam. My deepest condolences.' TMC MLA and actor Madan Mitra also shared his grief, describing Islam as a 'great social worker' and offering prayers for his soul.

Islam secured the Basirhat seat in the Lok Sabha Election 2024, defeating BJP's Rekha Patra, who had led protests against TMC's Sheikh Shahjahan in Sandeshkali. He had replaced incumbent MP Nusrat Jahan in 2024. Previously, Islam had served as MP from the Basirhat seat in 2009 and represented Jangipur in 2014, although he lost in that election. He later returned to state politics, achieving victories from the Haroa Assembly in 2016 and 2021. (ANI)
