Haji Sheikh Nurul Islam, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament representing Basirhat in West Bengal, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 61. The long-serving MP succumbed to cancer at his residence in North 24 Parganas district following a worsening of his health condition earlier that morning.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her sorrow on social media platforms. 'Sad to know of the demise of my valued colleague, our MP of Basirhat, Haji Sk. Nurul Islam. He was a dedicated social worker in a remote Sundarban area, and he worked hard for the upliftment of poor people in a backward region. People of Basirhat will miss his leadership,' she posted on X.

Tributes poured in from various political circles, including TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev and TMC MLA Madan Mitra. 'I am extremely sorry to hear about the passing away of Member of Parliament Haji Nurul Islam. My deepest condolences,' Dev posted. Mitra added, 'I felt really very sad to know about the sad demise of my fellow and our MP of Basirhat, Haji Sk. Nurul Islam. He is really a great social worker as he knows the flavour of the soil. May his soul rest in peace. My sincere condolences.'

Nurul Islam's political journey began in 2009 when he first won the Basirhat seat. Although he faced a defeat in the 2014 Jangipur Lok Sabha election, he made a robust comeback in state politics by winning the Haroa Assembly seat in both 2016 and 2021. He returned to the Lok Sabha in 2024, replacing Nusrat Jahan and defeating BJP's Rekha Patra by a margin of over 3 lakh votes.
