Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed his concerns on Tuesday about the growing commotion and acrimony in legislative bodies, noting that this issue has been periodically discussed with presiding officers. Birla emphasized that presiding officers have been urged to ensure that House proceedings are conducted with dignity and decorum, adhering to Indian values and standards.
The 10th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Conference, which commenced on September 23 at the Parliament premises, concluded today under the chairmanship of Om Birla, who also serves as the Chairperson of the CPA India Region.
Birla stressed the importance of reflecting Indian values in the traditions and systems of the House. He called for policies and laws to foster a sense of Indianness, aligned with the vision of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat'. He urged presiding officers to make the House a hub for dignified discussions on government policies and programs with inclusive participation.
Highlighting the critical role of legislatures in national and state development, Birla underlined the necessity for democratic institutions to remain engaged with the public to address their needs. He called for steps to make these institutions more transparent, accountable, and result-oriented, suggesting comprehensive training for new members on the functioning of the House.
Birla also expressed satisfaction with the digitization of legislative processes and records, advocating for accelerated efforts to realize the vision of 'one nation, one digital platform'. He assured that issues such as financial autonomy, the decreasing number of sitting days, and the implementation of e-Vidhan raised during the conference will be addressed.
Concluding the two-day conference, which saw participation from 42 presiding officers, Birla encouraged the adoption of new ideas and policies to ensure sustainable and inclusive development benefits reach the most marginalized sections of society. The theme of the event was 'The Role of Legislative Bodies in the Attainment of Sustainable and Inclusive Development'.
