Controversy Erupts After Sexual Abuse Accused Dies in Police Custody

Thane Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Akshay Shinde, the accused in a school sexual abuse case, who died in retaliatory police firing while being transported from Taloja Central Jail. The incident occurred on September 23 when Shinde allegedly seized a police revolver and opened fire on officers.
Addressing the press, Thane police PRO Shailesh Salvi stated, "We have filed a death case for the accused, and the rest of the investigation of the firing and other things is currently underway." Shinde, 23, was on his way to Badlapur for an investigation into a case filed by his ex-wife when the altercation happened at the Mumbra bypass.
According to police information, Shinde was taken to the hospital where he died. His body was later moved to JJ Hospital for a post-mortem. Shinde's death has generated political fallout between the Mahayuti government and the opposition in Maharashtra, coinciding with the upcoming Assembly polls. The Special Investigation Team had previously filed two charge sheets against Shinde for separate sexual assault incidents.
