On Monday evening, an accused in the sexual assault case of two minor girls in Badlapur was killed in a retaliatory police firing. Akshay Shinde, who faced accusations from his ex-wife, managed to snatch a gun from a police officer and opened fire before being shot.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reaffirmed the necessity of the police action, citing the danger posed by Shinde. 'The same opposition calling for his hanging now questions police self-defense,' Fadnavis remarked, deflecting criticisms.
The incident has underscored deep-seated issues in the handling of the sexual assault case. The Bombay High Court recently criticized the Badlapur Police for their insensitivity and procedural lapses in the initial investigation, recommending educational reforms and the establishment of preventive guidelines in schools.
