Spain Increases Green Hydrogen Ambitions with New Target

Spain has boosted its green hydrogen production target as part of its broader energy and climate strategy. The updated goal is 12 gigawatts of electrolysers by 2030, an increase from the previous 11 gigawatts. The plan will be discussed in a cabinet meeting and provides a critical roadmap for investments.

Spain has raised its goal for green hydrogen production capacity, aligning with an extensive upgrade of its energy and climate ambitions, according to a document from the Energy Ministry released on Monday.

The updated strategy sets a 2030 target of 12 gigawatts (GW) for electrolysers, tools essential for producing green hydrogen. This is an increase from the 11 GW target proposed in a draft update last year. The government is likely to approve this update of its national energy and climate plan at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

This plan is a crucial guide for companies planning investments, setting goals for energy efficiency and renewable energy, among other aspects. Spain aims to become a European leader in green hydrogen production, capitalizing on its abundant sunshine and wind resources to create clean energy.

Madrid, like most of its European counterparts, missed the end-of-June deadline for submitting its plan to the European Union.
