At least 30 decomposing bodies were discovered on a drifting boat off the coast of Dakar, Senegal, the military reported Monday. This tragic incident comes amid a rising number of migrants leaving West Africa.

Senegalese navy patrols were dispatched after the vessel was reported Sunday evening, situated 70 kilometers from the capital. According to military spokesperson Ibrahima Sow, the decomposed state of the bodies makes identification challenging, with investigations ongoing to ascertain the origin and full death toll.

This month alone, another boat carrying 89 people capsized off Senegal, killing at least 37. Increased migration through the perilous Atlantic route to the Canary Islands—a gateway to Europe—has seen over 22,300 arrivals this year, more than double last year's figures.
