In a pointed critique, BJP National spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Monday described newly appointed Delhi Chief Minister Atishi as a 'proxy CM', drawing a comparison to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Poonawalla suggested that Atishi, much like Singh, would be a leader controlled by higher powers—in this case, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal. 'Today, Delhi has received its new Manmohan Singh,' Poonawalla told ANI.
Poonawalla did not hold back, asserting that the AAP's comparison of themselves to Hindu deities was inappropriate. 'It's unfortunate that they are comparing themselves to Lord Ram and Bharat. What can be said about those who have broken promises made in the name of their children?' he lamented.
The BJP spokesperson went on to criticize the Delhi government over alleged use of firecrackers celebrating Kejriwal's release from Tihar Jail, a move that he claimed violated the capital's ban on fireworks. 'This shows their dual character,' Poonawalla remarked, calling it an insult to compare themselves to revered figures like Lord Ram.
Atishi, who assumed office on Monday, maintained that she is only temporarily filling in for Kejriwal. In an emotional gesture, she placed an empty chair beside her own, symbolically representing Kejriwal. 'This chair belongs to Arvind Kejriwal,' she stated, expressing confidence that he would return as Chief Minister following the expected February elections. Atishi's appointment comes after Kejriwal's resignation and his release on bail in an ongoing excise policy case.
Addressing his resignation, Kejriwal emphasized his lack of political ambition and commitment to fighting corruption. 'I resigned because I did not come here to do corruption,' he said at Jantar Mantar, adding that his decision was driven by a desire to clean up politics.
