In a crucial development, the Rouse Avenue Court on Monday granted interim bail to Rau's IAS Study Circle CEO Abhishek Gupta and coordinator Deshpal Singh until December 7, 2024. The duo had been arrested following the tragic drowning of three civil service aspirants in the basement of their coaching center in Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar on July 27.
Presiding over the case, Principal District and Sessions Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna granted the interim bail upon furnishing a bail bond of Rs one lakh each and two sureties of the same amount. Additionally, Abhishek Gupta has been directed to deposit Rs 2.5 crore by November 30 to the Red Cross, at the discretion of the Delhi Lieutenant Governor's office.
This order aligns with a previous directive by the Delhi High Court on September 13, which extended bail to four basement co-owners, provided they deposited Rs 5 crore to the Red Cross. The High Court has also requested the appointment of a retired judge-led committee to oversee illegal use of basements as coaching centers across Delhi.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court had granted bail to four co-owners of the basement linked to the deaths, imposing similar financial conditions. The court also instructed the CBI to produce a status report addressing waterlogging and rainfall data pertinent to the incident.
The trial court had initially denied bail to these four co-owners, asserting their liability due to the unauthorized use of the basement as a coaching institute, contributing to the unfortunate event.
