The Ayushman Bharat PM-Jay (AB PM-JAY) scheme, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 23, 2018, celebrated its sixth anniversary on Monday. The Ministry of Health marked the occasion by posting on social media, 'Celebrating 6 years of Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY! Here's to 6 years of making healthcare affordable for millions. Each Ayushman card represents hope and access to quality care. Let's continue to strive for a healthier India where everyone thrives!'
On September 11, the Union Cabinet approved health coverage for all senior citizens aged 70 years and above, regardless of income, under the flagship scheme Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY. This means all senior citizens 70 years and older, irrespective of their socio-economic status, are now eligible to avail the benefits of AB PM-JAY.
AB PM-JAY is the world's largest publicly funded health assurance scheme, providing health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family annually for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation to 55 crore individuals, covering 12.34 crore families. The scheme, which covers all eligible family members regardless of age, has facilitated 7.37 crore hospital admissions, including 49 percent women beneficiaries, and has saved the public over Rs 1 lakh crore.
In January 2022, the Government of India expanded the beneficiary base under AB PM-JAY from 10.74 crore to 12 crore families, taking into account India's population growth of 11.7% over the past decade. The scheme was also extended to cover 37 lakh ASHAs, AWWs, and AWHs and their families for free healthcare benefits.
