India's coal import surged by 40.56% to 25.23 million tonnes (MT) in July, marking a significant rise from the 17.95 MT imported in the same month during the previous fiscal year, as per data from B2B e-commerce platform mjunction services.
The April-July period also saw a notable increase in coal imports, with volumes climbing to 100.48 MT compared to 89.11 MT during the same period last year, mjunction services reported.
''Imports of non-coking coal saw an uptrend due to softening prices in the seaborne market, while the demand for coking coal dropped,'' said Vinaya Varma, MD & CEO of mjunction. Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy had earlier emphasized increasing domestic production to reduce reliance on imports.
