Karnataka to Highlight Space Tech Innovations at Bengaluru Space Expo 2024

The Department of Electronics, Information Technology, Biotechnology, and Science & Technology (ITBT) will highlight Karnataka's advancements in space technology at the Bengaluru Space Expo 2024. Minister for IT, BT, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Priyank Kharge, showcased Karnataka's status as a leader in space during his inaugural address.

'As a hosting state, Karnataka has built a strong ecosystem of government policies, MSME support, and infrastructure development,' Kharge stated. The expo, occurring from September 18-20, 2024, will feature startup innovations and government initiatives. Ekroop Caur, Secretary of the Department of IT and BT, emphasized Karnataka's role in space tech growth in her keynote address.

Caur detailed the support available to startups through innovative policies and programs. The government will present its vision to transform Karnataka into a hub for future space technology. 'We aim to generate over USD 17 billion in economic value by utilizing our 40% national market share,' she noted.

A major initiative includes establishing a Centre of Excellence for space technologies to support startups. The state is bolstering its aerospace and defense manufacturing through new facilities and educational institution partnerships. A specific state policy for the space sector is also being developed to drive investment and innovation. Minister Kharge added, 'We are consulting with industry stakeholders to create an agile ecosystem for startups and MSMEs.'

Bengaluru-based startup Pixxel recently secured a contract with NASA, joining their USD 476 million commercial smallsat data acquisition program. This achievement highlights Karnataka's transformation into a vibrant space tech hub. The Bengaluru Space Expo 2024 will spotlight space technology advancements and Karnataka's dedication to India's space ambitions.
