Balaji alias Kakka Thoppu Balaji, a notorious history-sheeter who had been absconding, was killed early Wednesday in a police encounter in the remote area of Viyasarpadi, Chennai. Authorities revealed that he was intercepted at a police checkpost in Kodangayur, prompting his attempt to flee.

According to police accounts, Balaji tried to use a firearm during the inspection, resulting in officers opening fire in retaliation. He was initially rushed to Stanley Hospital, where he was declared dead, and subsequently moved to Royapet Government Hospital for body preservation.

Balaji had an extensive criminal record with 59 pending cases. Senior officials including North Chennai JC Pravesh Kumar and Pulianthope DC Muthukumar, along with a forensic team, examined the scene of the encounter. The incident marks the second police encounter in Chennai following the murder of BSP leader Armstrong.

However, Balaji's relatives have condemned the police action, alleging that it was a premeditated murder.
