Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Convenor Arvind Kejriwal was released from Tihar jail on Friday evening, following a Supreme Court decision granting him bail in a corruption case related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. Kejriwal's lawyers provided surety bonds mandated by a special CBI judge, in compliance with the Supreme Court ruling.
Upon his release, Kejriwal was greeted by a large crowd of AAP leaders and supporters. He was accompanied by his wife, Sunita Kejriwal, and party leaders to his official residence, where he led a roadshow from the jail. Kejriwal addressed supporters outside the jail, asserting that his courage has increased and vowing to continue his fight against divisive forces.
The Supreme Court's expedited bail decision highlighted the issue of prolonged incarceration, which it deemed an unjust deprivation of liberty. The court set conditions for Kejriwal's release, including refraining from public comments on the case and mandatory attendance at all trial court hearings unless exempted. The apex court had previously granted interim bail until June 1 in the money laundering case connected to the since-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy.
