Under the guidance of Union Minister of Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, India is making significant progress towards a sustainable and low-carbon future. As part of its commitment to reducing carbon emissions, pledged at COP 26, the nation aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030. In alignment with this goal, NLC India Limited (NLCIL), a leading Central Public Sector Enterprise, has announced plans to triple its total power generation capacity by 2030.

NLCIL's strategy involves significantly boosting its renewable energy (RE) portfolio. The company aims to increase its RE capacity from 1.43 GW to 10.11 GW, making renewables 50% of its total planned capacity. This ambitious plan will require an investment of approximately ₹50,000 crore, supporting India's broader targets of achieving 'Net Zero' emissions by 2070. This effort is in line with the Government’s "Panchamrit" initiative, announced at the COP 26 Summit, reflecting India's commitment to climate action.

NLCIL's wholly-owned subsidiary, NLC India Green Energy Limited (NIGEL), will spearhead this renewable energy push. NIGEL, established with a focus on renewable energy generation, is currently implementing 2 GW of renewable assets and plans to expand its portfolio through competitive bidding and new opportunities in the green energy sector. This expansion will reduce reliance on conventional energy sources, diversify energy generation, and lower coal imports, ensuring a reliable power supply across India.

Looking beyond 2030, NLCIL projects that renewable energy will comprise 77% of its energy generation portfolio by 2047, supporting the company's target of achieving Net Zero by 2070. As the energy landscape evolves, NLCIL plans no new thermal power capacity additions. Instead, the focus will be on innovating to reduce emissions from existing thermal power stations.
