Eskom Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane has called for South Africa to urgently progress with its nuclear energy plans, emphasizing the need to keep pace with global developments in the sector. Speaking at a Nuclear Seminar organized by the Ministry of Energy and Electricity, Marokane stressed that nuclear energy is essential for achieving the country's strategic energy and carbon reduction goals.

"We are for nuclear," Marokane stated, highlighting the importance of an energy mix that includes nuclear as a complement to other technologies. He urged swift decision-making, noting that South Africa is falling behind in nuclear advancements.

Marokane also pointed out the significant economic and social benefits of nuclear energy, particularly in reducing carbon emissions and supporting the country's economic development. He praised the successful operation of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, which recently received new steam generators to extend its life by 20 years.

Highlighting global trends, Marokane noted that countries like Egypt are advancing in nuclear technology, and South Africa must act quickly to maintain its leadership on the continent.
