Samsung's India Operations Halted by Wage Boycott
Samsung Electronics' India operations faced a second day of disturbances as hundreds of workers at its plant in southern India protested for higher wages. The Sriperumbudur plant, operational since 2007, contributes significantly to Samsung's annual revenue in India, which is a key market for the brand.
Samsung Electronics' operations in India were disrupted for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, as hundreds of workers at the consumer electronics plant in southern India boycotted work to demand higher wages.
Entered in 1995, Samsung has grown into a key player in the Indian market, with over 200,000 retail outlets and annual revenue close to $12 billion. The company produces a substantial volume of its popular smartphones in India, accounting for 18.1% of the total smartphone shipments in the country during the second quarter.
The plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, has been a significant part of Samsung's operations since it opened in 2007, manufacturing a range of consumer electronic products, including refrigerators, televisions, and washing machines. This facility alone contributes 20% to 30% of the company's annual revenue in India and employs approximately 1,800 people. In 2022, Samsung announced further investment plans to establish a compressor plant for refrigerators at a cost of 15.88 billion Indian rupees.
