The Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government on Monday announced a complete ban on the production, sale, and use of firecrackers until January 1, 2025, in a bid to tackle air pollution during the winter months. Environment Minister Gopal Rai emphasized that the government is working on a war footing to curb pollution, urging residents not to use firecrackers.
"We will celebrate festivals with pomp and show but will not spread pollution," Rai said, reiterating the prohibition on all crackers, including green ones. "Our appeal to the people of Delhi is to avoid firecrackers to reduce the pollution level," he added.
Additionally, the government has introduced a 21-point Winter Action Plan, which includes using drones for real-time air quality monitoring at pollution hotspots. Departments have been directed to submit detailed action plans and suggestions by September 12. Rai also reached out to local political leaders for positive input on the plan.
