A month after the horrifying rape and murder of a young trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, several women in Siliguri marked the incident's anniversary with a candlelight vigil on Monday morning. They took an oath to persist in their protest until justice is served, commemorating the crime that occurred on August 9.

Notable figures from various fields, including Arjun awardee Mantu Ghosh, participated in the solemn ceremony. A woman activist stated, "We are expressing our thoughts on the brutal rape of the trainee doctor. Reports indicate the incident occurred at 4.10 a.m. As such, we have gathered at the same time. We have strong support and have vowed that a woman should feel safe, even if she walks alone at 2 a.m."

The heinous crime has triggered widespread demonstrations across West Bengal and the country. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case today. In a related development, BJP MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato demanded an investigation into health scams involving the hospital, implicating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Meanwhile, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar offered his resignation in response to the incident.

As tensions between BJP and the state government intensify, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at RG Kar Medical College, has been arrested. On September 2, the CBI detained Dr. Sandip Ghosh and three others over alleged corruption. Dr. Ghosh, the former principal of the college, remains in police custody with the next hearing set for September 10.
