GUWAHATI (Assam), September 5 (ANI) — Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya in Guwahati successfully celebrated the 39th National Eye Donation Fortnight, emphasizing the critical importance of eye donation. The event honored the altruism of eye donors and underlined eye donation's role in fighting corneal blindness.

The procedure, known as 'Corneal Transplantation', involves replacing a diseased cornea with a donated one from a deceased donor. This surgery can significantly restore vision, enabling patients to enjoy the world's beauty.

So far, medical science hasn't developed an artificial cornea, nor can animal corneas be used in humans. The only source for corneal transplantation remains the healthy cornea of a deceased donor, which must be collected within six hours of death. Anyone can donate, regardless of age, gender, or prior eye conditions.

The event stressed the transformative impact of eye donation. Esteemed guests, including Prof Dr. Dhrubajyoti Borah and Lion Seema Goenka, highlighted the collective commitment to ending blindness. Dr. Harsha Bhattacharjee and Dr. Kasturi Bhattacharjee discussed the cause's significance.

Dr. Balmukund Agarwal concluded the program with a 'Vote of Thanks'. Representatives from various NGOs participated, underlining their dedication to raising awareness. The initiatives focused on acknowledging grief counselors' efforts and promoting public awareness. Dr. Borah and Goenka emphasized the need for societal acceptance and awareness regarding eye donation.

Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, a pioneer in eye banking in Northeast India, continues its campaigns to promote eye donation. The institute recognized donors' families for their courage and reinforced their commitment to this life-changing cause.
