BJP West Bengal MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato has written to Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, urging the swift handling of the trial regarding the rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Mahato expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court for its intervention, but emphasized the need for expedited proceedings to address public frustration.

Mahato has further demanded action against Kolkata Commissioner of Police, Vineet Kumar Goyal, and other officials for allegedly tampering with evidence and obstructing justice. He accused them of mishandling evidence, undue haste in procedural matters, and a lack of transparency, contributing to a sense of injustice.

The trainee doctor's body was discovered on August 9, sparking nationwide protests. A civic volunteer and the former principal of the hospital, Sandip Ghosh, have been arrested in connection with the case. Additionally, the West Bengal Assembly has passed the 'Aparajita Woman and Child Bill 2024,' enhancing penalties for crimes against women. The bill mandates that rape investigations be concluded within 24 days.
