Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took significant strides towards transforming North Lakhimpur into a garbage-free town by inaugurating a Material Recovery Facility and a waste-to-compost plant on Wednesday. This facility, costing Rs 5.75 crore, aims for scientific waste disposal.

The initiative intends to clear the Chandmari area of legacy waste, accumulated over 40-50 years around the Sumdiri River. The government plans to reclaim 16 bighas of land for development as an 'Urban Forest and Urban Retreat Zone' along with an additional 10 bighas of land.

Apart from this, CM Sarma inspected other major projects including a RCC bridge on the Subansiri River and an interstate bus terminus, both targeted for completion by 2025. Emphasis was also laid on upgradation of Lakhimpur College to a university and the commencement of a nursing college in the region.
