Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena took a crucial step to address the chronic waterlogging issue in the INA Market area by inspecting the long-neglected Municipal Corporation of Delhi's drain on September 3. He instructed officials to embark on immediate desilting and cleaning operations.

According to a statement from the LG's office, the drain, clogged for years with thousands of tonnes of garbage and construction debris, had not seen any high-ranking dignitary's visit in the past decade until Saxena's inspection. MCD officials estimate that over 50,000 tonnes of waste need removal, with the first day alone yielding over a thousand tonnes.

The statement noted that the 6.5-kilometre-long drain, which feeds into the Kushak Drain and ultimately the Yamuna River, was obstructed by garbage, sewage, and monsoon rainwater. Heavy machinery has been deployed to access the drain by breaking portions of its side walls. Saxena urged the construction of a permanent ramp for future maintenance and the erection of a fence to prevent further waste dumping, emphasizing the need to provide a sustainable solution to the waterlogging woes in the area.
