Poland is intensifying efforts to enhance its production of 155 mm artillery rounds, aiming to guarantee adequate supplies in the event of a Russian assault on NATO, as stated by a senior official.
Maciej Idzik, board member of the state-owned Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), highlighted the ambition to stock Polish warehouses while establishing an independent production capacity within five to eight years. The demand for 155 mm artillery rounds has soared following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, leading allies to deplete their reserves by supplying Kyiv.
Poland, which has sent its own stock to Ukraine, lacks full in-house production capability and currently assembles rounds from purchased components. PGZ aims to initiate full production of all necessary parts within 24 months, targeting an output of 100,000 rounds annually. The European Union is also aiming to increase ammunition production to 2 million shells annually by 2025, backed by a 500 million euro funding initiative.
