Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi donated his entire monthly salary on Wednesday to aid flood relief and rehabilitation efforts in Wayanad, Kerala. Gandhi urged the public to contribute to help rebuild the lives affected by the disaster.

In a post on X, Gandhi stated, "Our brothers and sisters in Wayanad have endured a devastating tragedy, and they need our support to recover from the unimaginable losses they have faced. I have donated my entire month's salary to aid in the relief and rehabilitation efforts of those affected. I sincerely urge all fellow Indians to contribute whatever they can--every little bit makes a difference." He added that contributions can be made to the @INCKerala fund through the Stand With Wayanad - INC app.

On Sunday, Gandhi discussed relief efforts and the need to revitalize tourism in Wayanad with local Congress leaders. He stressed the importance of promoting tourism to help the region recover economically. Gandhi noted that while the landslide was localized, the perception that the entire area is dangerous must change. "Wayanad remains a stunning destination and will soon be ready to welcome tourists from across India and the world with all its natural charm," he asserted.

Gandhi emphasized several key areas for relief efforts, including improving interdepartmental coordination, ensuring adequate compensation, and addressing the loss of livelihoods. "There are four or five things we need to focus on: poor interdepartmental coordination, inadequate compensation, the rent issue, loss of livelihoods, and the impact on tourism," he said.

A study by World Weather Attribution (WWA) found that the landslides in Wayanad, which killed hundreds, were triggered by a burst of rainfall made about 10 per cent heavier by human-caused climate change, adds ANI.
