The New Zealand Government is taking steps to empower women in the horticulture industry by funding a new initiative aimed at enhancing networking opportunities and career progression. Associate Minister of Agriculture Nicola Grigg announced that the Government has committed $300,000 over three years to support the United Fresh Women in Horticulture (Women in Horticulture) initiative.

"Women currently make up around half of the horticulture workforce but hold only 20 percent of leadership roles," Minister Grigg noted. "This initiative is crucial in helping women upskill, reach their full potential, and be recognized in the industry."

The Women in Horticulture initiative will offer workshops and professional development sessions, providing participants with the tools needed to advance their careers. Additionally, the program aims to positively influence industry attitudes, encouraging greater gender equity in leadership roles.

"Women are underrepresented at the leadership level, which contributes to the gender pay gap and lower retirement earnings compared to men," Grigg said. "This initiative will help address these disparities, making New Zealand a world leader in gender equity within the horticulture sector."

As the Minister for Women, Grigg emphasized her commitment to supporting women’s success in all fields. "Our Government is focused on growing the economy and supporting our primary industries so that all Kiwis can get ahead. This program is a key part of that strategy."
