Houthis Attack Oil Tankers in Red Sea Amid Rising Tensions
Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacked the Saudi-flagged Amjad and Panama-flagged Blue Lagoon I oil tankers in the Red Sea, using ballistic missiles and drones. The attacks, labeled as 'reckless acts of terrorism' by the U.S. military, caused minimal damage. Both tankers continued their journeys without major issues.
Iran-supported Houthi rebels launched attacks on two oil tankers in the Red Sea, according to a statement by the U.S. military. The targeted vessels, the Saudi-flagged Amjad and Panama-flagged Blue Lagoon I, were hit by ballistic missiles and drones in what the U.S. termed 'reckless acts of terrorism'.
The U.S. Central Command confirmed that both tankers, carrying significant quantities of crude oil, were attacked but managed to continue their voyages with minimal damage. The Saudi-flagged Amjad was transporting approximately two million barrels of oil, while the Blue Lagoon I, managed by Sea Trade Marine SA, has a maximum capacity of one million barrels.
Saudi Arabia, a top world oil exporter, has expressed concern over these escalations, highlighting ongoing conflicts with Houthi-backed Iran. The Houthis' recent statement claimed solidarity with Palestinians amid the Gaza crisis, further fueling tensions. In total, the Houthis have launched over 70 strikes, sinking vessels and causing casualties, adding strain to maritime security in the region.
