India's Power Consumption Declines Amid Heavy Rainfall

India's power consumption fell by 4.7% to 144.21 billion units in August due to above-normal rainfall, reducing the usage of cooling appliances. The Indian Meteorological Department reported 287.1 mm of rainfall, 16% higher than usual. This led to a peak power demand drop to 216.68 GW. The power ministry projects a stable demand ahead with the festival season approaching.

India's power consumption saw a notable decline of 4.7% in August, dropping to 144.21 billion units compared to the same month last year. The main culprit: above-normal rainfall.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the country witnessed 287.1 mm of rainfall, which is 16% higher than the usual 248.1 mm for August. This excessive rainfall significantly reduced the need for cooling appliances such as air conditioners and desert coolers.

The peak power demand also contracted, reaching 216.68 GW this August, a noticeable drop from 236.29 GW in August 2024. Experts attribute this decline to the heavy rains, while the power ministry anticipates steady power consumption with the onset of the festival season in the coming months.
