Delhi's Patiala House Court on Wednesday reserved its decision on the bail plea of jailed parliamentarian Engineer Rashid, concerning a 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case. Rashid, known for defeating former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to win the Baramulla seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is currently lodged in Tihar jail.
Additional Sessions Judge Chanderjit Singh reserved his order following a detailed in-camera hearing. The court is expected to deliver its verdict on September 4. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has strongly opposed Rashid's plea, according to lawyers involved in the case.
Engineer Rashid, who has previously been granted a two-hour custody parole to take his oath as a Member of Parliament, is making his second regular bail application. Rashid, originally arrested in 2017, faced earlier incarcerations in 2005 and 2019 on charges of supporting militants and under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) respectively. Despite his detention, he successfully contested and won the 2024 parliamentary elections.
