Separatist militants launched a coordinated offensive in Pakistan's Balochistan province, resulting in 39 fatalities, officials confirmed on Monday. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) took responsibility for the attacks, marking their most extensive assault in years. This group has previously targeted Chinese interests in the region.
The BLA's main aim is to secure independence for Balochistan, an area rich in gas and mineral resources but exploited by the central government, the group claims. The province, home to significant mining projects by companies like Barrick Gold and Chinese state enterprises, sees frequent assaults on infrastructure and security posts from the BLA.
The insurgency has persisted for decades, destabilizing the region with guerrilla attacks, including high-profile targets like the Pakistan stock exchange and a university campus in Karachi. The conflict poses significant security challenges for Pakistan and complicates China's $65 billion investment in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
