The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UN's lead agency for operational hydrology, is set to play a crucial role at World Water Week 2024. The event, themed "Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future," will focus on the importance of water cooperation to ensure global peace and security. Accessible, clean, and safe drinking water is essential for human health, stable societies, sustainable development, and ecosystem integrity, yet its availability and distribution pose significant challenges, especially in the face of a disrupted hydrological cycle.

WMO will contribute its expertise to several key sessions and seminars during the event, highlighting the need for effective water management, governance, and early warning systems to mitigate the impacts of water-related disasters, which are becoming more frequent and intense. These sessions will also address the intersection of water security with climate change, biodiversity loss, food security, and poverty.

Some of the notable sessions WMO will be involved in include:

25 August:

Shaping Sustainable Water Futures in Fragile and Conflict-Affected Settings: Focusing on water insecurity and climate impacts in vulnerable communities.

SIWI Seminar Series (1/3): Monitoring and Data to Support Peace and Security: Exploring data types and applications for good water management and governance.

26 August:

Water: A Regional Public Good for Peace in West Africa: Discussing the role of water as a catalyst for peace and development in West Africa.

SIWI Seminar Series (2/3): Water Security Within Just Planetary Boundaries: Presenting the latest advancements in water security and its alignment with Earth System Boundaries.

27-28 August:

Showcasing Best Practices in Water Resources Monitoring and Assessment: Highlighting innovative approaches to ensure water security for all.

WMO's involvement in World Water Week 2024 underscores its commitment to supporting National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in its Member States and Territories. The organization's work spans the entire hydrological value chain, from real-time water data collection and management to hydrological modeling, forecasting, and early warning dissemination. By providing guidance and assistance, WMO plays a pivotal role in enhancing global water security and cooperation, ensuring that water resources are managed sustainably and equitably across the world.
