A revolution is taking place in the heart of rural India, where women are defying traditional norms and becoming successful entrepreneurs through self-help groups (SHGs) under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM).
These women, known as 'Lakhpati Didis' for earning over a lakh of rupees, are transforming not only their own lives but also those of others in their communities. From managing government ration shops to running profitable businesses, these women are testimonies to empowerment and self-sufficiency.
Veena, a manager of a government ration shop, credits her success to the connection made by an NRLM officer to a self-help group. Initially limited to household chores, she now handles shop management and encourages other women to seek self-employment.
Another success story is Hemlata, a clothing shop owner in Jhansi, who took a loan through an SHG to start her business. With her shop now worth Rs 6 lakh, she expresses her gratitude for the support that helped her repay the loan and grow her business.
Sheela Singh, operating as a Vidyut Sakhi, collects electricity bills and aids those unable to visit offices, earning a steady income that has improved her family's financial situation. Similarly, Manisha Yadav, working as a Bank Sakhi, assists women with their financial needs and has increased her earnings, gaining independence and pride.
Prime Minister Modi's recognition of these women underscores the significance of their achievements and the positive impact of government schemes in promoting women's empowerment and financial independence in rural India.
