Chief Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma of Assam is poised to present a pivotal bill in the forthcoming state assembly session commencing August 22. This legislation will mandate government registration of marriages and divorces within the Muslim community. Opposition parties have voiced strong objections, arguing the bill meddles with religious practices and targets specific communities.
Leader of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), MLA Mazibur Rahman, stated, "We support the amendment regarding child marriage, but we will vehemently oppose any government interference with marriage and divorce laws. This move is perceived as communalism." Congress leader Wazed Ali Choudhury echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the role of a magistrate cannot replace that of a Qazi and asserting their opposition to the bill's religious implications.
The Assam cabinet approved the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024, during a recent meeting chaired by CM Sarma. The bill stipulates that the registration will be overseen by the Sub Registrar instead of Kazis and aims to combat child marriage. Additionally, a protective radius around historic structures has been proposed to preserve heritage sites.
