In a notable collaboration, the Sri Lankan government and state-run Indian firm Petronet LNG Limited signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday to develop essential infrastructure for the Sobadhanavi Combined Cycle Power Plant at Kerawalapitiya, north of Colombo.
The agreement, signed by Sri Lanka's LTL Holdings Limited and Petronet LNG Limited, was officiated by Sri Lanka's Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekera, and India's Deputy High Commissioner, Satyanjal Pandey. The initiative aims to cut energy generation costs, transition to cleaner energy, and create a domestic market for LNG.
Slated for completion within 18 months, the Sobadhanavi power plant will be Sri Lanka's largest independent power producer, primarily operating on LNG. This significant move is part of Sri Lanka's broader strategy to shift from conventional thermal power to greener energy solutions.
