An encounter erupted Monday between terrorists and security forces in Dudu village, Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir, authorities reported. A CRPF officer was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries.

'During an area domination patrol at Cheel, Dudu, an exchange of gunfire occurred between terrorists and joint J-K Police and CRPF units,' stated the Jammu and Kashmir Police. 'One CRPF Inspector received bullet wounds and died. The operation is ongoing,' they added.

More details are awaited. The elections in Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled after a 10-year interval, with the last assembly election taking place in 2014.

Polling in the Union Territory will be conducted in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, according to the Election Commission of India. The votes will be counted on October 4. There are 90 assembly constituencies, including 74 general, nine ST, and seven SC. Earlier, on August 14, security forces neutralized a terrorist during an encounter in J-K's Doda district.

'One terrorist was neutralized in the ongoing operation. An AK 47 and an M4 rifle were recovered. Intermittent gunfire continues as operations proceed,' stated the White Knight Corps. Additional Director General of Police Anand Jain visited Doda to oversee the operation by the Indian Army and J-K Police.
