New Zealand and Palau have announced a strengthened partnership focused on ocean and marine resource management, as Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters visits Koror, Palau.

Minister Peters emphasized the importance of marine resources for food security and economic stability in the Pacific, noting their deep connection to the cultural and environmental well-being of Pacific communities. “Palau is globally recognized for its leadership in ocean conservation, and New Zealand is proud to support its efforts,” Peters stated.

The New Zealand government will provide funding to bolster Palau’s capacity to manage its marine resources. This support aims to enhance Palau's ability to implement marine plans, develop small-scale climate-smart fisheries, and expand marine protection initiatives.

Peters is accompanied by Hon Jenny Salesa, Chair of the Labour Pacific Caucus; Tim van de Molen, Chair of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee (FADTC); and FADTC member Teanau Tuiono. During the visit, the delegation is engaging with President Surangel Whipps Jr., Minister of State Gustav Aitaro, and other Palauan officials to discuss mutual priorities and share perspectives on regional issues.
