The Haj Association of India has expressed strong support for the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, introduced in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, labeling it a significant government initiative. According to Chairman A Aboobucker, the bill is poised to benefit women's empowerment and provide assistance to the economically disadvantaged.
Aboobucker stated, 'On behalf of the Haj Association of India, New Delhi, we welcome this amendment as the Act is quite old. Given the current scenario, some changes are necessary. The Government of India has undertaken a significant initiative and we welcome it without any reservations.' He criticized the bill's detractors, emphasizing that it will be beneficial for women and the poor despite some organizations and political entities opposing it on a national scale.
Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, who tabled the bill, emphasized its intent to address problems related to State Waqf Boards' powers, the registration and surveying of waqf properties, and the removal of encroachments. Despite Rijiju's assurance that the bill respects religious freedom and aims to grant rights previously denied, it faced stiff opposition. Critics argue it undermines the federal system, lacks adequate consultation, and may violate constitutional principles.
Support for the bill came from the All India Sufi Sajjadanshin Council, which praised the amendments and urged cooperation. Chairman Syed Naseruddin Chishty recommended against politicizing the bill, emphasizing the necessity for transparency and addressing corruption within Waqf boards.
