Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Paris Olympics after being found overweight in the 50 kg category. Opposition leader R Ashoka expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it a tragic day for the nation.

Speaking to ANI, Ashoka mentioned that Indians had mentally anticipated Phogat's gold medal win, especially after her qualification for the finals in freestyle wrestling. "It's really very sad. We had accepted a gold medal," he said.

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed that the Indian Olympic Association lodged a strong protest with United World Wrestling following Phogat's disqualification. During a statement in Lok Sabha, the minister detailed government efforts in supporting her preparation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to IOA President PT Usha, directing necessary action.

The Indian Olympic contingent expressed regret over Phogat's status, explaining that she exceeded the weight limit by a few grams despite the team's efforts. They requested respect for her privacy and no further comments were made.

Phogat's disqualification means Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, whom Phogat defeated in the semi-finals, will now compete against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt from the United States for the gold medal.
