The Indian government is set to introduce a groundbreaking bill aimed at reforming the management of Waqf properties, responding to long-standing appeals from Muslim women for increased transparency and efficiency. Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, highlighted the persistent demands for reform during a conversation with ANI.

Informed government sources indicate that the bill will likely be presented following the passage of the Finance Bill, expected this week. The government engaged with various Muslim intellectuals and organizations before drafting the amendments to ensure the reforms are comprehensive. One significant amendment is the mandatory registration of Waqf properties with the District Collector's office to facilitate proper evaluation and monitoring. Another key change is the inclusion of women in the Central Waqf Council and state Waqf boards to enhance inclusivity.

The original Waqf Act of 1954, replaced in 1995 and subsequently amended in 2013, aimed to empower Waqf Boards. The new proposal underscores the importance of women's representation, including Muslim scholars and elected officials, to broaden and diversify the leadership of Waqf boards. The bill represents a crucial step in addressing the community's concerns and advancing gender equality within Waqf property management.
