Delhi Revenue Minister Atishi addressed the media on Friday regarding the deaths of 14 inmates in July at Asha Kiran Shelter Home, a facility for intellectually challenged individuals. She noted that many of the deceased had comorbidities, and assured that those found negligent would face strict actions.
Asha Kiran, overseen by the Social Welfare Department, is currently headless following Raaj Kumar Anand's resignation. Home to 980 intellectually challenged people, many of whom have severe disabilities and other physical issues, the shelter is staffed around the clock by medical professionals and caregivers.
Minister Atishi revealed that a magisterial inquiry with a 24-hour preliminary report deadline has been ordered. She promised rigorous governmental and police action against anyone found responsible for negligence or irresponsible behavior, pending the post-mortem and preliminary inquiry reports.
