In a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Bansuri Swaraj on Monday attributed the deaths of three IAS aspirants in Delhi to the 'utter and absolute apathy' of the local administration. The incident has cast a shadow on the capital's governance.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Bansuri Swaraj said, 'The students, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala, came to Delhi to prepare for the UPSC examination. Their tragic deaths are a direct result of the ruling AAP's indifference. Despite complaints from residents, the local MLA and officials took no action.' She urged the Home Ministry to investigate the matter thoroughly.
On July 27, the three UPSC aspirants died after the basement of their coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar was flooded. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor met with the family of one of the victims and highlighted the need for compensation and compliance with safety norms. Meanwhile, SP leader Akhilesh Yadav called for an inquiry into the building's NOC issuance.
The incident has spurred student protests in Karol Bagh, leading the MCD to seal 13 illegal coaching centre basements. Delhi Police have arrested seven individuals, including the coaching centre's owner, for culpable homicide. Authorities are working to ensure justice while advising protestors to maintain peace.
